Jefferson County International Airport in Washington, US, will install a solar energy system which is expected to provide 16,000kWh of electricity to run the airport's beacon and landing lights.

The $100,000 system has been offered for free to the facility by a consortium of solar interests called the Jefferson Solar Group and the solar firm Power Trip Energy.

Installation work is expected to begin at the airport in March 2010, following recent Federal Aviation Administration approval.
