The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has again reiterated the need for a global sectoral approach to aviation and climate change under the leadership of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

Speaking at the sixth annual Dr Assad Kotaite Lecture hosted by the Royal Aeronautical Society in Montreal, the IATA's director general and CEO Giovanni Bisignani identified environmental responsibility as a top priority for aviation, alongside safety and security.

The ICAO's proven track record for dealing with aircraft noise was highlighted by Bisignani, who asked for a similar approach to curb aircraft emissions ahead of climate change talks in Copenhagen.

The aviation industry has pledged conformance to stabilise carbon-neutral growth from 2020 and reduce net emissions by half by 2050.
