George Bush Intercontinental Airport in the US has installed a new airport surface detection equipment system.

George Bush is the 21st airport to receive the new technology through the Federal Aviation Administration's ASDE-X programme, which will eventually be implemented across 35 airports.

ASDE-X offers air traffic controllers increased situational awareness of surface operations through runway incursion detection and alerting.

The new system offers multiple surveillance technologies such as surface movement radar, multilateration and automatic dependent surveillance – broadcast (ADS-B) surveillance information systems.
