Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in the US is to develop an inline baggage screening system and build an apron for its new terminal using $34m in stimulus funding.
The Federal Aviation Administration offered $13.97m for the apron development while the Transportation Security Administration provided $20m for the baggage screening system.
The new Maynard Holbrook Jackson Jr International terminal will have 12 gates to serve increasing passenger volumes, bringing the airport's total number of gates to 40.
The total cost for the whole project is estimated to be $1.35bn.
Construction for the new terminal commenced in 2008, and work is expected to be complete by 2012.
