The upgrade of the existing Caticlan Airport in the Aklan province of Philippines is facing opposition from various environmental pressure groups.
The construction of the P2.5bn airport has been met by opposition from the Earthsavers Movement and the Boracay Foundation (BFI) on the grounds that it lacks an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Environmental Clearance Certificates (ECC), and there have been no public consultations on the project.
The upgrade has been initiated by the Department of Transportation and Communication and will involve lengthening the existing runway.
Governments of the Aklan and Romblon provinces have also ruled out the project.
