The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has introduced a paperless boarding pass pilot programme at San Francisco International Airport in the US.

The programme, launched in association with Continental Airlines, allows passengers to receive boarding passes electronically on their cell phones or PDAs, which are scanned by TSA security officers at the checkpoint.

Each paperless boarding pass displays a two-dimensional tamper-proof barcode along with passenger and flight information that identifies the passenger.
