Newark Liberty International Airport in the US has installed model X Sensis airport surface detection equipment (ASDE-X), which combines an alerting system with runway incursion identification.

The system is said to enhance ground operations safety by offering better situational awareness of taxiways and runways to improve ground traffic management and decrease delays.

The system will function as the foundation for the FAA’s runway status lights (RWSL) programme and complements ADS-B and other next-gen systems.

Through the FAA’s ASDE-X programme, the system has already been installed at 18 US airports.

By 2011, the FAA will use ASDE-X at 35 airports.
