Guam International Airport, located on the island of Guam near the US, has announced the completion of its $26.5m air cargo facility, which is expected to open on 1 September 2009.

The 163,000ft² facility has replaced the outdated cargo facility that has been in use since 1976.

The new facility can handle over 3.5 million tons of cargo helping the airport to gain a more prominent position in the local aviation sector.

The cargo facility includes new security and safety features that will help offer seamless services to the customs department on all outbound and inbound cargo.

The move is part of the airport’s plans to capitalise on Guam’s lenient cargo regulations for overseas carriers authorised by the US Department of Transportation.

PacAir Properties has made a $26.5m investment in the new integrated air cargo facility.
