Fredericton International Airport in Canada will begin a C$22m development project to cope with increasing passenger demand at the airport.

The project was introduced after a study revealed that passengers were experiencing inferior service levels during peak hours.

The airport has experienced a 50% increase in passenger traffic over the last ten years and has become unable to handle passenger processing needs.

Fredericton International Airport Authority chief executive officer David Innes said that while the airport should have the capacity to process 360 travellers an hour, it is not able to adequately handle 200 travellers.

The remodelled airport terminal will be extended from 4,200m² to 6,800m² and construction will commence immediately.
