The Indonesian Government has granted international standing to the new Sultan Iskandar Muda Airport in Banda Aceh.

The new airport is a three-storey edifice that can handle 1.7 million travellers annually, and features a 3,000m runway that is compatible with Boeing 747-400 take-offs and landings.

Aceh Governor Irwandi Yusuf recommended that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono approve a visa-on-arrival facility at the airport that will make it easier for more direct international flights to the province.

The Malaysian budget airline Air Asia is the only foreign operator that currently flies to Aceh.
