The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is to begin testing backscatter and millimetre wave imaging technologies at the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.
This is the second US airport to begin testing both technologies in recent weeks – after the TSA launched a similar scheme at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport.
The two advanced technologies are able to generate images that allow TSA to discreetly screen travellers for non-metallic and metallic threats without any physical contact. Privacy protections have been put in place for passengers and the screening process is currently optional.
TSA will evaluate the public reaction and operational efficiency of the two technologies before making a decision on implementing it instead of conventional metal detectors.
The testing period will last two months.
