The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is to begin testing a new backscatter X-ray technology at Greater Rochester International Airport.

The advanced imaging technology will be used to screen travellers at the airport for non-metallic and metallic threats without any physical contact.

The X-ray equipment will be used as a replacement for a metal detector in one of the airport's six security lanes.

Greater Rochester International Airport federal security director John McCaffrey said the new equipment would remain in the airport for a two-month trial period.

McCaffrey said that the scanner eliminates the need for travellers with medical conditions to undergo pat-down searches.

TSA will evaluate the technology's operational efficiency and public acceptance at the airport in comparison to the metal detector once the test period is completed.

TSA has also recently begun testing backscatter and millimetre wave imaging technologies at George Bush Intercontinental Airport.
