John F Kennedy International Airport in the US is to expand its 14,572ft runway under a new $204m contract with construction firm Tutor Perini Corporation.
The contract was awarded by the New York and New Jersey port authority and includes broadening and extending the airport's runway 13R-31L by between 150ft and 200ft.
The project also includes broadening taxiway intersections and creating greater taxiway access to improve aircraft movement.
The completed runway will feature new electrical feeder systems, runway lighting and electrical infrastructure, and accommodations for future navigational aids.
The runway rehabilitation will commence immediately as part of the JFK delay reduction programme.
