Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (WCCA) in the US will receive a stimulus grant worth $15m for renovation of runway 9L/27R.

The funds supplied by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) will enable runway renovation to finish by November 2009, 18 months ahead of its original schedule.

According to WCCA, the ARRA funds will also generate approximately 225 local full-time jobs.

WCAA chief executive officer Lester Robinson said that the stimulus fund has enabled the county to upgrade a vital piece of transportation infrastructure.

The total value of the renovation project is estimated at $34.6m.

Rehabilitation of the runway commenced on 29 June 2009.
