Houston Airport System (HAS) in the US has assumed responsibility for the expansion of Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose.

HAS has taken over the management of the airport from Alterra Partners, which has come under severe criticism for not completing the terminal expansion due to economic and other reasons.

Houston Airport plans to complete the airport's current terminal construction by end of 2010.

The expansion project will cost $40m for the first and second phases, while the third and fourth phases will cost $150m.

As part of the expansion project, Recope, which supplies fuel and Copesa, which provides aircraft maintenance, will be relocated to allow the expansion of the main terminal.

The HAS takeover was approved by the controller's office on 28 May 2008.
