Around 30% of Britons are in support of a new airport over the expansion of either the Heathrow or Gatwick airports, a new poll has revealed.

Conducted by Ipsos MORI, survey for the Standard has revealed that while 24% of the people surveyed supported the construction of a second runway at Gatwick, around 22% voted for Heathrow airport.

Almost 14% suggested that an airport other than Heathrow or Gatwick, including Birmingham, Manchester or Stansted, should be expanded.

The study has found that 33% did not see the need for an immediate expansion of airport capacity in the country.

"At the moment, the public’s view is dominated by concerns about environmental impact and noise rather than jobs or cost."

The survey has interviewed 1,026 people over the age of 18.

39% of the respondents were concerned about the effect of the expansion on the environment.

Ipsos MORI head of political research Gideon Skinner said: "Most Britons want our airport capacity increased, but there is no clear consensus on the best solution – remembering that this poll covered the whole country, not just London and the South East.

"At the moment, the public’s view is dominated by concerns about environmental impact and noise rather than jobs or cost."

The findings come in the wake of the Airports Commission’s recommendation of a third runway as the ideal option for the expansion of the UK’s aviation industry.

The commission’s report has observed that a third runway at Heathrow would offer maximum benefits to the economy as it would lead to the introduction of 40 new destinations, and creation of over 70,000 new jobs by 2050.
