The Canadian province of Ontario will launch an environmental assessment study to electrify the air-rail link between Toronto Pearson International Airport and Toronto Union Station.

The air-rail link will connect Ontario's international airport gateway with the busiest transit and passenger rail hub in the country.

The air-rail link is expected to take 1.2 million car trips off the roads in its first year of operation.

Each year, more than five million people travel between downtown Toronto and the airport, a number that is expected to reach nine million by 2020, according to ontario.ca.
