European Commission vice-president for transport, Siim Kallas, has held a meeting with CEOs from major European airports to discuss how to prevent airport closures during heavy snow fall.
In an Airports Package, the Commission will introduce specific measures to address key issues related to airport closures in winter. The package will be published later this year.
Vice-president Kallas said that volcanic ash is difficult for the aviation industry to predict, but we know that winter arrives every year and we should be ready for it.
Kallas has recommended the airport CEOs prepare a contingency plan to remove snow at airports, and ensure better co-operation between all those involved in the air and on the ground.
Kallas has also recommended airports to increase integration among themselves to work as a network and improve passenger information about delays and re-routing.
Commission vice-president has urged European airports to provide a progress report on contingency planning for this coming winter.
