A consortium of L&T Oman and Galfar Engineering & Contracting has received a OMR294.110m ($763m) contract to modernise and expand Salalah International Airport in Oman.

The contract, called MC5, will include the construction of a new 71,000m² passenger terminal with enough capacity to handle one million passengers each year.

The modernisation programme will also include a new 4km runway to handle large aircraft such as the Airbus A380, an advanced air traffic control tower and a maintenance, repair and overhaul facility.

The project will also involve construction of a cargo terminal to handle 100,000t of air freight per year and serve as an international and domestic hub for sea cargo.

The consortium will have to complete the entire project in 30 months as part of the contract, according to zawya.com.
