Vietnam Airlines is planning to invest $430m in Long Thanh International Airport, which is currently under construction, to provide ground services and in-flight meals at the airport.

In a proposal to authorities, the carrier said that it is planning to offer aircraft maintenance services, serve passengers in lounges, supply jet fuel and meals, and set up duty-free shops, reported VnExpress International.

The state-owned airline is already providing these services at major airports in Vietnam.

Vietnam Airlines has revealed that it will invest 30% of the amount from its own resources and borrow the rest.

As per the proposal, the carrier’s subsidiaries can either set up amenities at the airport or joint ventures with the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV).

ACV is currently overseeing the construction of Long Thanh International Airport and will later undertake the airport’s operations.

The carrier is also hoping to get a dedicated area at the airport to build hangars for aircraft maintenance and in the terminal to prioritise clients.

Construction of the first three phases of Long Thanh International Airport commenced this January.

The new airport will be located near Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City, covering more than 5,580ha of total area.

Around $4.6bn has been invested in the first phase of the airport, which will have the capacity to manage 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tonnes of cargo annually.

The airport is expected to start operating from 2025.

After the completion of the final phase in 2040, the airport will have four runways and four passenger terminals.

The airport’s annual capacity will subsequently increase to 100 million passengers and five million tonnes of cargo.

The airport is also expected to reduce the pressure on Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport in HCM City, which will operate as a domestic airport.
