The UK Government has authorised all major airports in the country to have new 3D cabin baggage screening equipment in place by 1 December 2022.

In an announcement made on 25 August, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson stated that the new 3D technology will tighten security, improve passenger experience, enable quicker checks and reduce plastic usage.

Equipped with advanced imaging systems, the screening equipment will provide security personnel with better images of cabin baggage, simplifying tasks and further enhancing the security set-up.

The new government policy will change the existing arrangement surrounding the limits on carrying liquids and laptops.

The current liquids limit requires passengers to carry containers with a maximum volume of 100ml.

This restriction will no longer be in place once the new screening equipment is installed.

Passengers will also no longer be required to remove laptops and liquids from their cabin baggage while it is screened.

The government is planning to introduce the technology over the next few years.

Boris Johnson said: “We are home to the largest aviation network in Europe, with millions of people passing through our airports every year for work, holidays and family visits.

“We’re set to streamline those trips with the rollout of this ground-breaking technology, cutting down hassle for travellers and improving security measures.

“By making journeys through UK airports easier than ever, this new equipment will help boost the vital role our airports play in securing the UK’s position as a global hub for trade, tourism and investment.”

The new 3D equipment is currently under a pilot phase at London’s Heathrow Airport.

UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said: “As an outward-looking global nation, our transport hubs are more important than ever and investing in our security infrastructure means we are investing in our nation’s future.”
