The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in the US has awarded a $1.41bn contract to Tutor Perini/Parsons joint venture (JV) for the design and construction of the new domestic Terminal One at Newark Airport.

The new terminal will span over a one-million square foot area, featuring 33 gates. It is designed with an aim to improve passengers’ experience of their travel.

The Terminal One Redevelopment programme will provide a better roadway network and parking space for approximately 3,000 cars, in addition to providing other infrastructure enhancements.

Port Authority chairman Kevin O’Toole said: “There has been a continuous surge in the number of passengers at Newark Liberty, which last year welcomed more than 40 million of them.

“Overall, the programme is expected to generate more than $4.6bn in regional economic activity and create 23,120 jobs.”

“This board action advances our commitment to address the growing needs of our travellers, which cannot be adequately met by the current Terminal A.”

The board authorised $1.85bn in construction and other expenditures, including $1.41bn for the JV agreement. Combined with previous authorisations, the total project cost is $2.7bn.

Preliminary design work of the new terminal is 30% complete, with construction already underway on three critical roadway bridges that will improve connection to the central terminal area.

Additionally, Munich Airport International (MAI) secured an operations, maintenance, and concession (OMC) advisory services contract for the Terminal One project.

Under the agreement, MAI will be responsible for providing design and terminal operations advisory services to the Port Authority during the design stages for the new terminal.

Construction work is scheduled to commence in April 2018 with completion due in 2022.
