Turkish Airlines has completed the relocation of its base from the old Atatürk International Airport to the newly opened Istanbul Airport.

Nearly 10,000 pieces of equipment, including planes, aircraft-towing vehicles, and security equipment, have been transferred to the new airport.

In July last year, Turkish Airlines first announced that the airline and its subsidiaries will relocate their base to Istanbul’s new airport.

Turkish Airlines board and executive committee chairman İlker Aycı said: “Currently the biggest airport project of the world, this enormous facility will be the home of the resounding local and global growth of Turkish Airlines in future while becoming the most important driving force behind our growth with its state of the art physical capabilities and capacity.

“This enormous facility will be the home of the resounding local and global growth of Turkish Airlines.”

With the completion of the relocation exercise, all flights of Turkish Airlines are likely to land and take off from the new airport, which is still under the development phase.

Scheduled to be fully completed by 2027, Istanbul’s new airport will feature six runways and four terminals, which will be able to manage nearly 200 million travellers per annum.

The airport is being developed in four phases with an investment of approximately $12bn.

The first phase of development has now been completed, including the construction of three runways.

With the completion of the first phase, the new airport has the capacity to accommodate more than 90 million passengers per year.

Airport operator IGA unveiled plans in March this year to recruit an initial 16,000 employees for the newly opened Istanbul Airport.
