Thales and Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) have completed the delivery of the Air Traffic Management (ATM) system and radars for six of the country’s airports.

The systems were delivered under a contract, which was signed in August 2017, with an aim to improve Tanzania’s air traffic safety and efficiency.

As part of the modernisation programme, ATC surveillance radars and TopSky – ATC have been deployed at Songwe (HTGW), Dar es Salaam (DAR), Kilimanjaro (JRO), Mwanza (MWZ), Zanzibar (ZNZ) and Arusha (ARK) airports in Tanzania.

Combined with current sensors, Thales‘ co-mounted STAR NG Primary approach radar with RSM970S Mode S en-route secondary radar alongside TopSky – ATC will automate the en-route, approach and tower control centres.

Besides, the RSM 970S secondary radar Mode S downloads aircraft parameters, offering timely notice of aircraft evolution and clearances to the controller.

It also provides the ACAS Resolution Advisory Report.

Additionally, Dar Es Salam Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) has been installed with an ATC simulator for training TCAA air traffic controllers and engineers.

In a statement, Thales said: “The TopSky-ATC EFS (Electronic Flight Strip) replaces paper strips, taking track of every flight, allows Tanzanian Air traffic controllers to monitor safely and efficiently from a touchscreen real-time data updates and contributes to data sharing for collaborative decision-making.”

It will also enable controllers to manage variations that can impact air traffic control decisions at any time, such as traffic volume and weather changes.

TCAA director-general Hamza Johari said: “Implementation of the Tanzania Radar Project with Thales has realised the intended surveillance objective of the Tanzanian airspace through enhanced safety, security and efficiency.

“The associated automation system has enabled more efficiency in managing revenue collection obtained from aircraft movements database. Through this successful project, TCAA is able to escalate ICAO standards to the highest level.”

Currently, Thales TopSky – ATC oversees and controls over 80% of African airspace.

Last month, Thales finished the installation of automatic border control gates at three more Spanish airports, namely Reus (REU), Girona-Costa Brava (GRO) and Tenerife Sur (TFS).
