Tampa International Airport (TPA) in the US state of Florida has reported a steady increase in passenger traffic with several airlines resuming services across the country.

The airport recorded its three highest passenger counts over the last week since the number of travellers plunged more than 90% in late March and early April following the Covid-19 outbreak.

On two days last week, TPA served more than 28,000 passengers while on Sunday the figure crossed 30,000.

However, passenger numbers are still significantly below the figures recorded in the same period last year.

TPA Operations and Customer Service executive vice-president John Tiliacos said: “We remain hopeful that the worst of the pandemic is behind us and that passengers are gradually feeling more confident in making travel plans.

“We will be relentless in doing everything in our power to restore passenger confidence in flying again, which includes providing the cleanest airport terminal facilities and voluntary Covid-19 testing for all passengers.”

Recently, the airport launched the country’s first Covid-19 testing centre for all departing and arriving passengers in collaboration with BayCare Health System.

Since the launch of the service on 1 October, more than 1,000 passengers participated in the voluntary testing programme.

Notably, the US is the worst affected by the Covid-19 pandemic in terms of the number of confirmed cases and related fatalities.

As of 13 October, the country has reported more than 7.8 million cases and more than 215,000 deaths.
