Philippines’ Office for Transportation Security (OTS) and Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) has deployed Smiths Detection baggage screening technology at terminals 1, 2, and 3 of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

OTS and MIAA purchased 12 HI-SCAN 6040 2is HR units, an advanced dual-view X-ray detection system that can identify explosives in hand luggage.

OTS also installed 12 iLane.evo units, which are automatic tray return system (ATRS) to streamline the passenger screening process.

The new systems are expected to increase passenger throughout and improve the passenger experience.

An OTS official stated: “As we work towards the revival of air travel, Smiths Detection’s HI-SCAN 6040 2is HR scanners’ advanced dual-view X-ray capabilities with ATRS will help to increase ease of our baggage inspection process.

“By providing high-quality image scans, our operators can determine baggage content more easily. This will minimise the time passengers spend in queues while facilitating tighter security requirements.”

HI-SCAN 6040 2is HR can accurately identify threats, including solid or liquid explosives, during baggage inspection.

Similarly, the iLane.evo automatic tray return system can offer passengers a steady supply of trays and will intuitively move suspicious luggage during baggage inspection.

Together, these devices can significantly improve existing security measures and reduce the time it takes for passengers to pass through airport security checkpoints.

The iLane.evo installation was completed in March.

Smiths Detection Asia managing director John Tan said: “The continuation of the partnership between Smiths Detection and OTS reinforces the partnership between our organisations.”

In September last year, Smiths Detection secured a $96.8m contract from the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to supply checkpoint CT systems.

Last August, Smiths Detection opened a new training and experience centre in India to serve airport clients.
