Siemens Postal, Parcel & Airport Logistics (SPPAL) has secured a contract to supply a tray-based baggage handling system and software for the new satellite terminal at the International Airport of Bangkok in Thailand.

The new tray technology will provide the much-needed expansion of the hub’s processing capacity, enabling it to achieve a peak throughput of 10,800 pieces of baggage per hour.

Siemens has collaborated as technology leader for the project with Thai infrastructure company Loxley, which integrates the system, together with further partners.

“We are delighted that with Bangkok, another major air hub in Asia has opted for our new system generation.”

Siemens Postal, Parcel & Airport Logistics CEO Michael Reichle said: “We are delighted that with Bangkok, another major air hub in Asia has opted for our new system generation.”

Siemens’ new VarioTrays offer quick and secure transportation and sorting of baggage. The solution’s conveyor belts run over rollers to avoid dynamic friction between the belts and conveyors, which significantly reduces the weight of the new trays and leads to lower energy consumption.

The baggage handling system of the satellite terminal is connected to the main building through a tunnel. The system reaches its peak throughput of ten metres per second over this 950m route.

Siemens supplies special out-of-gauge trays for bulky baggage such as surfboards. These extra-large trays are operated using the same conveyor lines as the standard baggage and are transported and sorted efficiently.

A system for computer-based monitoring and control of all technical processes dubbed Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) is also being implemented at the airport.

Bangkok’s airport welcomed approximately 61 million passengers last year.
