The Russian Federal Air Transport Agency has granted approval for Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport to commission stage one of its renovated Terminal C.

The terminal is scheduled to open in January next year.

Part of the northern terminal group, the upgraded terminal has an annual passenger handling capacity of 20 million.

Spread over 127,374m2, it has the capacity to manage international flights.

The terminal also includes an indoor pedestrian passageway, which serves as a connection to the five-storey parking space with a capacity of 2,500 vehicles.

The renovated terminal is equipped with 84 check-in desks and 160 passport control booths for passenger processing.

Sheremetyevo Airport noted that Terminal C’s design reflects traditional Russian construction and ‘naturally combines the best tradition of Russian art and modern technologies’.

Russian airline Aeroflot and JSC Sheremetyevo International Airport subsidiaries are currently checking and debugging the terminal’s systems.

Sheremetyevo International Airport is located in Khimki, 29km north of Moscow, Russia. It is the largest Russian airport based on passenger and cargo operations.

The airport reported an influx of 45.84 million passengers last year, a 14.3% increase from the previous year.

This September, Sheremetyevo International Airport inaugurated its third runway, making it the only Russian airport with three runways.

In May, a Russian passenger airplane was engulfed in flames at Sheremetyevo Airport, killing at least 41 passengers.

In March last year, Beumer Group installed a baggage handling system at Sheremetyevo Airport to link North and South Terminal Complex operations.
