Selex ES, a subsidiary of Leonardo, has launched new airport surface management technologies to prevent runway incursions at airports.

The technologies, marketed as AeroBOSS, are developed to offer a common operating platform for airport operations control, maintenance and emergency resources.

AeroBOSS will enable real-time flight and ground vehicle tracking and collaborative decision making that will ensure all vehicles in the airport operate safely and prevent runway incursions.

The solution is equipped with a runway incursion warning system (RIWS) that alerts the vehicle drivers before they enter a runway area.

In a statement, Leonardo said that only a small group of 3,100 airports are equipped with runway incursion prevention systems. The AeroBOSS technologies will help such airports to improve operational safety.

The move comes at a time when the Civil Air Navigation Services Organization and Flight Safety Foundation have expressed concerns over airport runway incursions as air travelling gradually recovers from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
