Schiphol is seeing a traffic rebound, with 3.8 million passengers recorded flying from, via or to the airport in August 2021.

The number is higher than the previous year when the airport saw 1.9 million passengers, hit by travel curbs triggered by the pandemic.

However, it is still below the pre-pandemic level of August 2019, which saw 6.8 million passengers travelling through the airport.

Of the 3.8 million passengers reported in August, more than 1.4 million had a transfer at Schiphol.

Passengers with a transfer included nearly 700,000 unique passengers, who are counted two times in the international counting method.

Three million passengers travelled from or to a destination within Europe.

In August 2021, 31,847 flights took off and landed at Schiphol, which is a 29% slump compared to August 2019 figures.

Although passenger volumes were down at the airport, the number of cargo flights increased from 1,194 to 1,743, compared to 2019.

The number of cargo flights at the airport was 20% less compared to 2020, but 46% more than in 2019.

Last month, Royal Schiphol Group reported a net loss of $186m (€158m) in the first half of 2021 (HY 2021) as the pandemic continues to impact global travel.

The company’s net loss was $290m (€246m) in HY 2020 while it had a profit of $156.8m (€133m) in HY 2019, with a moderate air traffic recovery in the first half of 2021.

The company’s interim results demonstrated that the Covid-19 pandemic and further travel restrictions impacted the Royal Schiphol Group airports.
