San Diego International Airport (SAN) has partnered with Honeywell Building Technologies (HBT) to test its video analytics solution for monitoring airport behaviour.

The technology vendor will work with the SAN innovation lab, which is the airport’s accelerator programme.

The partners will be testing the video analytics technology in a real airport environment in the early third quarter of this year to enhance the health and safety of passengers and airport staff.

The airport may assign Honeywell for the large-scale technology installation if the trials yield positive results.

The Honeywell Pro-Watch Video Management System (VMS) ensures through cameras that the airport’s occupants are taking Covid-19-related measures.

This system leverages deep-learning artificial intelligence (AI) video analytics for the detection of non-compliance and can separate and report such incidents to airport staff.

SAN innovation programme manager Gina Jacobs said: “Honeywell’s video analytics technology aligns with our health and safety focus, and we look forward to working with them as they continue to develop it in the actual airport environment.

“Our hope is these ideas that advance here at SAN will work at airports around the world.”

The solution provides loitering detection, as well as zone-based and real-time monitoring to reinforce social distancing.

Honeywell added that the programme can recognise trends, track patterns and monitor airport personnel and passenger movement to minimise overcrowding.

The solution is linked with Honeywell Pro-Watch Intelligent Command, which creates a dashboard with the places requiring security actions. It also gives real-time alerts in the absence of social distancing or mask-wearing protocols, allowing airport staff to take appropriate action.

HBT vice-president, chief technology and chief product officer Manish Sharma said: “Honeywell’s video analytics solution can help airports better comply with and reinforce guidelines like social distancing and mask-wearing.

“Not only can the powerful AI and machine learning (ML) capabilities in our video analytics help airport staff to identify trends, track patterns and understand how spaces are used but also lessen unnecessary interactions with passengers to help keep staff safer.”
