Low-cost carrier Ryanair is set to open a new operational base at Madeira Airport (FNC) in Portugal, involving a $200m investment, in the third quarter of 2022.

This marks the airline’s fifth base in Portugal, where two new aircraft will be based.

As part of this initiative, around ten new routes will be introduced, with 40 new weekly frequencies.

Five of the new routes will link Madeira directly to new destinations.

Ana CEO and Vinci Airports Portugal and Brazil director Thierry Ligonnière said: “Besides reinforcing the existing global partnership between VINCI Airports and Ryanair, this base will allow, through the opening of five new destinations routes in 2022, a significant increase in Madeira’s air connectivity, boosting the diversification of tourist markets, so important for the recovery and growth of tourism in the region.”

According to Vinci Airports, Ryanair factored in the airport’s appeal to carriers and passengers while deciding to launch a new base in Madeira.

In a statement, Vinci Airports said: “In accordance with Vinci Airports’ environmental ambition, ANA has driven the environmental transition in Madeira’s airports, with initiatives in the areas of energy and climate change, circular economy and protection of natural resources, including the reforestation action carried out last 12 November in Porto Santo with the IFCN and the Regional Government, which will allow the offsetting of carbon emissions in the future.”

In September, Vinci Airports decided to work with Airbus and Air Liquide to expedite the decarbonisation of the aviation industry by promoting the use of hydrogen at airports.
