Richmond International Airport in Virginia, US, has set a new record with annual passenger traffic surpassing four million in 2018.

Data released by the Capital Region Airport Commission shows that a total of 4,077,763 passengers flew in and out of the airport, an increase of 11.5% over the previous year’s record of 3,657,479.

Richmond International Airport president and CEO Jon Mathiasen said: “For the sixth consecutive year, RIC reports growth as it supports the robust business environment across the Richmond region.

“Our success is attributable to support from our customers, whether travelling for business or for discretionary purposes, and to the commitment of our airlines in providing ever-improving access to our most demanded destinations at competitive fares.”

Passenger traffic grew 16% in December last year to 338,879, creating a new record for the month.

Delta Air Lines emerged as the market leader during December with a 30.4% share, while American and United Airlines made up the top three with 29.84% and 14.99% respectively.

Total cargo fell 6.5% in December, but witnessed an annual increase of 3.7% to surpass 140 million pounds in 2018.

Aircraft operations decreased 5.4% compared to the same month a year ago, but increased 4.4% for the year to more than 100,000 operations.

RIC offers direct flights to major domestic destinations and connecting options to points around the world.

The airport and its tenants create about 16,000 jobs and contribute $2.1bn in economic activity annually to the Richmond region, according to the Virginia Department of Aviation.
