India-based Reliance Infrastructure has been awarded a contract by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to construct a greenfield airport at Hirasar in Rajkot district, Gujarat.

The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract is worth INR6.48bn ($91.81m) and includes detailed designing, engineering, procurement and construction of a runway, basic strips, turning pads, taxiways, apron, perimeter and other roads.

It also includes earth work in cut/fill and grading, drainage system, related retaining structures, fire station, MT pool, fire pit and cooling pit.

Reliance Infrastructure, which won the contract as an independent contractor, will also be responsible for the development of ARP and associated approaches, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of airfield ground lighting system, visual aids for navigation and bird hazard reduction.

Reliance Infrastructure clinched the project over nine other bidders, including Afcons, L&T, Dilip Buildcon and Gayatri Projects.

The contract states the airport should be completed within 30 months from the date of issue of letter of award (LoA).

The new airport, which is being constructed near National Highway (NH-8B), is nearly 36km from the existing Rajkot Airport. It will also meet the spillover requirements of Ahmedabad in the future.
