Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Development Company (TRSDC), which is developing a Red Sea tourism project, has awarded contracts for an international airport.

The contract has been awarded to a joint venture between Nesma & Partners Contracting and Almabani General Contractors, following a competitive tendering process.

The contract covers the essential construction of airside infrastructure work, including the design and building of a 3.7km Code F runway, Code B seaplane runway, parallel and link taxiways and pavements.

It also includes the construction of aeronautical navigational aids, aerodrome ground lighting, airside utilities, helipads, roads, and associated buildings.

The Red Sea Development Company CEO John Pagano said: “The Red Sea Development Company is making huge progress in the development of a world leading destination and by awarding our largest contract to date, we take another significant step in this direction while demonstrating our ongoing commitment to creating opportunities within the Saudi Arabian construction sector.”

Last year, TRSDC awarded a design contract for the airport to Foster + Partners. Land levelling work is currently underway to prepare the airport for development.

Once complete, the airport is expected to serve an estimated one million tourists per year, catering to both domestic and international flights. It is scheduled to open for fights towards the end of 2022.
