Qatar’s Hamad International Airport (HIA) has unveiled its phase B expansion plan at Cityscape Qatar in Doha.

According to the plan, the expansion project will introduce a 10,000m² indoor tropical garden to a central concourse at the airport.

It will also feature a 268m² water feature, which the airport said would be the project’s focal point.

HIA has noted that its expansion will be carried out in two phases, A and B.

Phase A will include linking concourses D and E. It is expected to be completed by early next year and aims to boost the airport’s capacity to around 53 million annual visitors by 2022.

Phase B will extend concourses D and E, increasing capacity to 60 million passengers.

A new transfer area to shorten connection times and a central concourse that can house nine extra wide-body aircraft stands will be constructed.

The terminal facility will feature multiple levels over 85,000m² while the gross floor area over three levels and three mezzanine levels will be approximately 323,000m².

The terminal building will receive a four-star Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) rating and a LEED Silver certificate.

A landscaped retail, food and beverage space of over 11,720m² will also be built. The airport plans to integrate art and greenery with the retail and dining areas.

All trees and plants will be obtained from sustainable forests. The airport’s internal conditions will be controlled to suit the trees, with the help of a column-free, 85m grid shell roof made of performance glass to control the light entering HIA.

Spanning 9,000m², the Al Mourjan lounge will be situated above the retail space and will overlook the tropical garden.

It will feature gymnasiums, additional spas, business centres, restaurants and other passenger facilities.

A cargo terminal will also be built to enable the airport to handle approximately 3.2 million tonnes of cargo a year. It is estimated that the terminal will be operational by 2023.

Hamad International Airport chief operating officer Badr Mohammed Al Meer said: “Our expansion has been designed to seamlessly integrate with the existing terminal, allowing smooth passenger flow and improving the overall passenger experience by minimising travel distances for connections and providing clarity and intuitive wayfinding.”
