Airports Authority of India (AAI) has announced that the construction work for the new integrated terminal building at Pune International Airport is scheduled to be finished by August 2022.

The total project is valued at around $65.07m (Rs4.75bn), with 60% of the work already concluded.

With a capacity to manage 19 million passengers annually, the new terminal building will cover a 500,000ft² area and aid in minimising congestion during rush hours.

Covering an area of 22,000m², the current terminal building can manage seven million passengers per annum (MPPA).

However, the existing terminal building handled over nine million passengers in 2018-19.

The AAI said: “To reduce congestion during peak hours at Pune Airport, AAI has undertaken the construction of the new integrated terminal building at a cost of $65.07m (Rs4.75bn). As much as 60% of the work has been completed and construction of the new building is likely to be completed by August 2022.”

With a four-star Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) rating, the building will also include 36,000ft² space for food and beverages and retail outlets.

According to the AAI, a $16.44m (Rs1.2bn) multilevel car parking facility is also being built at the airport, with a capacity to park 1,024 cars.

This facility will be connected to the current terminal’s departure area with a sky bridge and also have a staircase, escalators and elevators.

In February, the airport announced its closure for flight operations for 14 days from 26 April to 9 May due to runway resurfacing work.
