A Pegasus Airlines flight has crashed at Sabiha Gokcen International Airport in Istanbul, Turkey, killing three and injuring 179 people on 5 January.

Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya stated that the accident occurred while landing in poor weather conditions, causing the aircraft to skid off the runway for 50m to 60m.

The flight, PC 2193, was arriving from Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport in Turkey.

The Boeing 737-86J aircraft broke into three parts after it fell 30m to 40m at the runway end. The fuselage broke, in addition to the section of the plane near the tail.

Anadolu Agency reported that the plane caught fire after the crash and was later doused off by firefighters.

Injured passengers were sent to 18 nearby hospitals to get treated for their wounds.

The airport runway was closed after the accident and all flights were diverted to Istanbul Airport.

The airport runway resumed operations at 4am local time (+1:00 GMT) on 6 January.

Pegasus Airlines said in a statement: “We are deploying every resource to support those affected by this accident.

“Pegasus Airlines’ priority is to support the relatives and friends who have lost loved ones, and we will be doing everything we can to help them in the aftermath of this tragic event, as well as doing our utmost to provide our full support in meeting the needs in hospital of our injured passengers.”

Last month, a Pegasus Boeing 737 from Sharjah, UAE, also skidded off the runway at Sabiha Gokcen International Airport.

In January 2018, a Pegasus Boeing 737 ran off the runway and fell down the cliff near the sea at Turkey’s Trabzon Airport.

No casualties were reported in either incident.
