Latvia’s Riga International Airport (RIX) has reported passenger volume of over 390,000 in the month of August, which is nearly half of the August 2019 figures.
According to airport performance data, passenger numbers in August 2021 were 92,000 more than the previous month.

In a statement, RIX said: “The majority or 60% of passengers in August were carried by the national airline airBaltic, 18% by the Irish low-cost airline Ryanair and 7% by Wizz Air.
“Of the 87 destinations offered by Riga Airport in August, London, Tallinn and Kiev were the most popular travel destinations.”
However, compared to August last year, passenger volume at the airport decreased by 53%.
In the first eight months of this year, passenger numbers at the airport declined by 79% compared to 2019 and by 36% when compared to last year.

Last month, the airport handled a total of 4,878 flights, of which 3,772 were run by scheduled passenger carriers.
The cargo segment at the airport witnessed growth.
RIX handled 39% more cargo flights in August 2021 versus August 2019 while the number of cargo flights serviced in the first eight months of this year nearly doubled compared to the same period of 2019.
The volume of cargo carried on cargo flights at the airport surged 52%, compared to the first eight months of 2019.
In July, RIX entered the Airport Council International (ACI) Europe initiative Net Zero 2050 to attain a 100% reduction of carbon emissions under the airport’s direct control by 2050.
The airport has pledged to not produce CO₂ emissions in its basic operations or emissions that cannot be avoided or indemnified with suitable storage of equivalent amounts of greenhouse emission gases until 2050.
