Panasonic has won a contract to deliver 66 additional automated facial recognition gates for passport control at several Japanese airports.

The Immigration Services Agency of the Japanese Ministry of Justice first awarded the contract to Panasonic in 2017.

Since then, Panasonic has deployed 137 facial recognition gates at five major Japanese airports, namely Tokyo Narita, Tokyo Haneda, Nagoya Chubu Centrair, Osaka Kansai and Fukuoka.

According to the latest contract, Panasonic will supply 66 more units across seven airports, including Haneda Airport in Tokyo, Sapporo New Chitose Airport and Okinawa Naha Airport.

The initiative is part of the Ministry of Justice’s plan to use biometric gates to accelerate the immigration process for foreign nationals.

The Japanese technology firm said that the system does not require previous biometric data. It uses photographic data of the passenger’s face embedded in the passport’s IC chip and matches this with a photograph taken at the facial recognition gate to authenticate identity.

Nearly 80% of all Japanese passengers use Panasonic’s facial recognition gates, according to the Ministry of Justice.

Panasonic said that its latest facial recognition engine is capable of identifying faces despite various attributes such as aging, makeup and facial expression.

According to the technology vendor, the gates also feature the latest passport reader that works with passports in any position.

The new gates include a number of terminal screen layouts to ensure that the system can be operated and managed according to the requirement of the examination procedures. They also have the ability to stop unauthorised entry such as tailgating.
