Ontario International Airport (ONT) in the US state of California has managed nearly 200,000 travellers last month, indicating a gradual recovery in passenger volumes.

The airport also reported a 20% increase in commercial freight volume last month.

The Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA), which operates ONT, said that the airport handled 195,037 passengers last month.

It includes 191,467 domestic passengers and 3,570 international travellers.

However, the overall figure is nearly 58.4% less compared to the traffic numbers registered in the same month a year ago.

In the first nine months, ONT welcomed 1.9 million passengers, a decline of 52% compared to the same period in 2019.

OIAA CEO Mark Thorpe said: “Cargo continues to be a point of strength and pride for us as Ontario enjoys the fastest rate of growth among airports in the continental US.

“And while passenger volumes remain significantly lower year-over-year, Ontario’s rate of recovery puts it third among US airports and first among airports in California.”

He added that the passenger numbers reached lowest in April, but since May traffic increased on a percentage basis every month.

Ontario International Airport is located 35 miles east of Downtown Los Angeles in the centre of Southern California.

Before the pandemic, the airport offered non-stop commercial jet services to 26 major airports.

As part of its efforts to contain the spread of Covid-19, OIA installed personal protective equipment (PPE) kiosks at the airport in June.

The kiosks have face covers, disposable gloves, disinfectant wipes and alcohol-based hand sanitisers.
