Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport’s new terminal has officially opened for operations in Nigeria.

The first passenger carrier to land at the airport was Asky Airlines’ B737-700 aircraft,  with the flight number ET-AVP. The aircraft was carrying 91 people, which included 85 passengers and six crew.

Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) managing director Saleh Dunoma said the new terminal had been built to meet passenger demand.

Dunoma added that he expects other global airlines will soon relocate their operations as the new terminal features the latest equipment and passenger facilitation processes.

FAAN north central regional manager Sani Mahmud said the first operation went exactly as planned, with the successful processing of 91 travellers on the Asky Airlines flight from Lome, Togo.

“We were able to commence flight operations in the new terminal of the NAIA.”

Mahmud assured that the facilities in the terminal had been tested and certified and were able to manage all international flights.

Passengers can access free Wi-Fi and luggage trolleys in the new terminal.

Mahmud said: “We thank God for making it possible that today, we were able to commence flight operations in the new terminal of the NAIA that was commissioned on 20 December 2018 by President Muhammadu Buhari.”

The newly inaugurated facility is one of the four international terminals being constructed by the China Civil Engineering and Construction Corporation (CCECC) in Lagos, Kano and Port Harcourt, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
