Smiths Detection is set to deliver nine units of its hold baggage explosives detection system (EDS) to Domodedovo International Airport (DME) in Moscow, Russia.

As part of its Level 1 screening, the airport will install Smiths Detection’s six CTX 9800 DSi systems to help screen all checked baggage.

It will also deploy two HI-SCAN 10080 XCT systems and one XRD 3500 for secondary screening and alarm resolution.

The integrated, multilayered installation of the new EDS systems will enable automated hold baggage screening at DME that will help reduce false alarms as well as time-consuming, potentially-dangerous manual inspections.

The solutions are slated to be installed in the new Terminal 2 of the airport before the beginning of the FIFA World Cup being hosted in Russia next year.

Smiths Detection regional sales manager Irina Batukhtina said: “Smiths Detection commends DME for choosing the increased detection, imaging and throughput capabilities resulting from a multilayered hold baggage screening programme.

"Smiths Detection commends DME for choosing the increased detection, imaging and throughput capabilities resulting from a multilayered hold baggage screening programme."

“Combining the industry’s largest service footprint with the capability to integrate multiple, regulator-approved, technologies makes Smiths Detection a reliable partner of choice for all airports.”

Integrated with advanced computed tomography (CT) technology, both of Smiths Detection’s CTX 9800 and HI-SCAN 10080 XCT systems have the capability to screen up to 1,800 bags each hour.

The company’s XRD 3500 uses X-ray diffraction technology to precisely distinguish between potential threats and harmless materials.

The scalability of the EDS systems enables enhancements related to threats, substances and cyber-security to be integrated over time through software upgrades.
