The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) has partnered with Aireon to improve aircraft tracking in Singapore airspace.

Under a memorandum of agreement (MoA), Aireon and the CAAS will implement a space-based automatic dependent surveillance, broadcast (ADS-B) service, to enhance surveillance coverage and provide better air traffic services.

CAAS director-general Yap Ong Heng said: "This new space-based ADS-B capability represents the next level of surveillance capability and will complement our existing ground-based air traffic surveillance systems.

"The space-based solution will allow real-time tracking of ADS-B equipped aircraft within the Singapore flight information region (FIR)."

"This technology together with the right operational procedures can potentially enhance flight efficiencies and help reduce fuel costs for airlines."

Air traffic controllers should provide a larger separation between aircraft in remote areas and over the oceans that are not under surveillance coverage, to ensure safety of the aircraft and passengers, the CAAS said.

The space-based solution will allow real-time tracking of ADS-B equipped aircraft within the Singapore flight information region (FIR).

The partners will evaluate requirements of the Singapore FIR, develop required policies, standards and procedures for the ADS-B service, as well as determine measures to improve air traffic management services in the region.

Aireon president Don Thoma said: "This agreement is an extremely important step forward in ensuring safe, efficient and cost-effective air navigation services on a long-term, sustainable basis."
