German airport operator Fraport has submitted the building permit application to the City of Frankfurt (FRA) for the construction of the new Pier G at Frankfurt Airport, in a bid to address passenger growth.

Originally planned for development in the second phase of FRA’s new Terminal 3 construction, Pier G is being commissioned ahead of schedule.

The new facility will be completely integrated into the airport’s hub function and provide cost-saving, no-frills ground handling for LCC traffic.

The construction of the new pier is slated to commence in the middle of 2018 and will be carried out in three phases.

Costing up to €200m, the initial phase will offer additional capacity for four to five million passengers each year and is scheduled to be completed in 2020.

Fraport executive board chairman Dr Stefan Schulte said: “Submitting the building permit application for the new Pier G is an important step that will enable us to alleviate future capacity constraints at Terminals 1 and 2 as early as 2020.”

"The new pier is designed as a fully functional passenger terminal tailored specifically to the needs of low-cost carriers."

“The new pier is designed as a fully functional passenger terminal tailored specifically to the needs of low-cost carriers and will be optimally integrated into Frankfurt Airport's hub system.”

During the second phase, the airport facility will be expanded to handle a total annual capacity of up to seven million passengers and connected to the first section of the new Terminal 3.

In the third and final phase, the pier will be expanded to feature new bridges and jetways.

Once the first section of Terminal 3 is opened in 2023, the new pier will be fully linked to the airport’s people mover system and baggage conveyor system.
