The Brazilian Government is seeking private investors to modernise its crowded airports ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which the country will host.

The government said that the state’s involvement in any project should be 24 or 24.9%, with the rest tendered out to private companies.

Construction of the third terminal at Guarulhos International Airport São Paulo is already underway at an estimated cost of R$1.2bn ($700m) and will increase its passenger capacity to 52.7 million.

The project will be complete by 2014.

Brazil will also allow private companies to build and operate the major passenger terminals of capital Brasilia and at Viracopos airport in Campinas.
