Mitsubishi has been awarded a contract to supply a terminal Doppler lidar system to the Romanian Air Traffic Services Administration (ROMATSA).

The DIABREZZA A Series system will be supplied by 2020 under an order received from systems integrator Centrul Pentru Servicii De Radiocomunicatii SRL (CSR).

Using microwaves, the terminal Doppler weather radar systems measure precipitation movements to effectively detect wind shear around airports in wet-weather conditions.

Laser beams are transmitted by the terminal Doppler, which then detects light backscattered by dust or other particles in the air, enabling the system to use the Doppler frequency shift in the backscattered light to make line-of-sight measurements of wind speed and direction.

Using and analysing data, ROMATSA will be able to detect the hazardous phenomena such as wind shear and microbursts within observable ranges to protect aircraft from adverse weather conditions.
