Manchester Airport has announced that it will trial pre-booking of 15-minute security slots, in a bid to boost the experience and restore confidence in travel after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Manchester Airport is the first airport in the UK to introduce such a trial. Passengers can book their slots online on the airport’s website.

This is a part of the different initiatives introduced by MAG to ensure safe air travel for passengers, as the demand for air travel increases.

When passengers book their free slot, they can access a separate lane that leads directly to the security checkpoint which allows them to reach the departure lounge quickly.

The airport will also be able to manage the number of passengers that enter security and keep the queues shorter.

The slots will be available on a first-come-first-served basis and are limited.

The system was developed by MAG’s in-house digital business, MAGO, which aims to offer online technology for airports.

Based on the success of the trial, the technology will also be adopted at MAG’s other airports at London Stansted and East Midlands.

Manchester Airport COO Brad Miller said: “Safety and security will always be the first priority and, at the same time, Covid-19 will undoubtedly reshape the airport experience. We are exploring every innovation and technology that can help us to adapt to the new world, protect public health and restore confidence in air travel.

“This new measure will allow us to manage our security process more efficiently in these challenging times, providing a better and more comfortable experience for passengers.

“It is the latest in a series of measures introduced by MAG to make travel safer during the pandemic, which includes asking passengers and colleagues to wear face coverings and piloting temperature screening technologies.”

In March, amid the reduced passenger numbers caused by the pandemic, Manchester Airport decided to operate all its flights from Terminal 1, effective from 25 March.
