The SOMO Findel Airport Consortium has commenced the runway refurbishment project at Luxembourg Airport (LUX).

Members of the SOMO consortium include Colas, Felix Giorgetti SàRL, C Karp-Kneip Constructions and JDC Airports.

The project entails an investment of $177.75m (€150m) for the client Lux-Airport.

As part of the project, the airport’s sole runway will be renovated entirely.

Since 1984, the 4,000m-long, 60m-wide runway has not been refurbished completely.

The overhaul covers structural reinforcement of the shoulders, a new drainage system and replacement of current lights with 1,500 LEDs, which will lower carbon emissions and save energy.

Teams from Colas, Felix Giorgetti SàRL and C Karp-Kneip Constructions will be responsible for the earthworks, asphalt paving, drainage, utility networks, marking, and more.

Meanwhile, JDC Airports will implement the aeronautical ground light system.

The work will be performed mainly during the night to minimise the project’s impact on regular air traffic.

Spread over two April-to-October phases, the project is scheduled to conclude at the end of 2022.

In May, the preparatory works under the project commenced and changes such as a new security checkpoint were implemented to provide access to the construction site.

Colas Projects project manager Stéphane Brondino and spokesperson for SOMO Findel Airport Consortium said: “Backed by a dynamic partnership with lux-Airport and an integrated consortium of experienced companies, the project will allow Luxembourg to benefit from the fully refurbished runway that the country needs, in a very short amount of time.”

In a separate development, Ireland’s Cork Airport (ORK) obtained $11.85m (€10m) in Exchequer funding for the runway reconstruction project.

The airport has awarded the main construction contract for upgrading the airport’s main runway to Colas.
