The Wi-Fi at London Stansted Airport in the UK has received child-friendly certification from Friendly WiFi, the government-initiated standard for public Wi-Fi.

The certification was granted after the airport’s parent company Manchester Airport Group (MAG) committed to the scheme.

Stansted’s free WiFi is used by a younger demographic, with approximately half of the airport’s passengers aged under 34.

The Wi-Fi is capable of blocking inappropriate content, making it safe for children to use.

MAG noted that this accreditation will provide additional reassurance for the parents of young children.

Friendly WiFi was established in 2014 to ensure that WiFi offered at public areas adheres to the minimum filtering standards.

The Friendly WiFi symbol is present at areas that don’t grant access to inappropriate content such as indecent images and advertisements.

Stansted’s free Wi-Fi, which was introduced in 2013, is now available at the check-in counters, departure lounge, arrivals hall and gates.

London Stansted chief commercial officer Aboudy Nasser said: “More and more of the 28 million passengers we welcome to our airport every year choose to connect to the free WiFi we offer, whether that’s to download a last-minute film for their flight, catch up on emails or say bon voyage to friends and family before they fly.

“As I’m sure many parents will appreciate, children also increasingly want to use their connected devices when they are at the airport and as a responsible airport operator, we know that it’s our duty to keep them safe online.

“Friendly WiFi provides further reassurance to parents, and all our passengers, that they can browse safely.”

Free to use charging points are available at most bars and restaurants at the airport, with built-in charging points also available within the departure lounge.
